SFOTE's mission is to work with communities around the world, forming partnerships with global professionals and local leadership to create site-specific, sustainable programs with clear goals that provide lasting change.

An example of the type of advocacy that SFOTE sponsors is best identified in our 2008 project, Laventille Bus. SFOTE found that Laventille, an economically impoverished and crime-ridden area in Trinidad had a particular problem: even though there is a free public school system, there is no public bus system. Because the cost of transportation is high, many children in the area eventually drop out of school because their parents are unable to afford bus fare. Upon further analysis, SFOTE was able to find a direct correlation between drug use, gang involvement, teen pregnancy, area based crime, and matriculation rates. By working with locals to identify the root of the problem, SFOTE is focusing on using international resources to isolate and fix a single problem with large ramifications.

SFOTE forms networks. By linking people with ideas for change to locals capable of inspiring community building and informed experts from around the globe, viable solutions can be realized.
